Battersea Summer Scheme

A principle project of Battersea Crime Prevention Panel we organise trips, outings and events for underpriviliged young people living in the poorer and more deprived areas of Battersea and Balham.

Founded 1992

  • Mission statement

Battersea Summer Scheme provides summer activities and opportunities for the underprivileged youth in Battersea and Balham. These are areas suffering from severe deprivation within the worst 5% of need in the country, with the worst statistics for health, educational achievement, crime (particularly relating to drug and knife use and abuse) and ‘at risk’ children in the borough. There is high unemployment, overcrowding and households lacking in amenities. The activities are aimed at taking young people away from their home environment to gain new and different experiences where, they learn to interact with their peers AND leaders. We target those who are most vulnerable and considered to be at risk. Many of these disengaged young people have no other distractions during the long school summer holidays and this is when problems can begin. One of the borough’s issues is the lack of interaction between the young from different estates and cultures, the root cause of many of the problems so we integrate them on our trips and activity days. We work closely with the local council, met police and youth groups to deliver our activities which include day trips to venues such as mountain biking, canoeing, a day at the beach, fruit picking, outdoor activity centres and even Butlins. We also send them on outward bound type residential courses a real challenge for many. We organise a week long sport and activity event in Battersea Park in August.
