Escaping Victimhood is a charitable company supporting people whose lives have been devastated by the impact of serious crime. It delivers a workshop programme to combat the effects of trauma.
After her son was hacked to death Wendy found that she could only see in black and white. Years later, on the Escaping Victimhood workshop, she suddenly realised she could see a small blue flower – her colours had returned.
The trauma of a serious crime, such as the murder of a child, or a physical attack, can have repercussions impacting on every aspect of day to day living. People can find it impossible to continue to work, physical and mental health can seriously deteriorate, relationships with surviving children can be badly damaged. The nightmare of being involved in a traumatic incident can happen to anyone, almost anywhere and at almost any time. It is this random element that makes the experience so terrifying and shocking.
Escaping Victimhood runs a unique residential programme which combines many different activities to enable those traumatised by crime to move from being a victim to being a survivor and to reclaim their lives. The workshops offer participants comfortable space away from their normal lives in the company of others with similar experiences. Participants can learn about the impact of trauma, and attend sessions on personal change, as well as body work such as massage and tai chi, which provide relaxation, and the potential for the release of traumatic memories held in the body. Creative activities, such as painting or photography, provide participants with new ways of expressing their experience, and trained practitioners offer a range of the
