Brentwood Catholic Youth Service

The BCYS exists for young people in Essex and East London. We are a Catholic charity, but we are open to all. We provide a retreat house, Walsingham House, where over 5,000 young people come in school, parish and youth groups to be able to take a step back from the pressures and stress of their lives. For some this is considerable - family pressures, the stress of poor living conditions, and/or the tensions of living in communities where there is a lot of violent crime affecting young people mean that the retreat expereince is very precious. We offer youth-led retreats, with a team of volunteers who have dedicated a year of their lives to Walsingham House, and we try to rpovide a range of stimulating and thought-provoking activities, times for reflection, times of prayer, drama, art and music.

We also run trips abroad, where young people serve others, especially the elderly and those with special needs. This includes two trips to Lourdes each year. These moments transform young people: whoever they are, they can see that they do have something to give. Again, everyone is welcome to these trips, though they are run with a Catholic ethos.

Donations would be used in the first instance to repay a £90,000 debt after a major refurbishment of the retreat house. Alternatively we seek to establish a well-resourced bursary fund to enable those from low income backgrounds to be funded for trips and other opportunities. We can only do this in a piecemeal and inadequate way at the moment, and would seek £25,000 to establish such a fund
