U-Turn works with hard to reach women who are homeless / rough sleepers and coerced into prostituion. The women suffer abuse from punters and from the coercers.
Most are using ***** and crack ***** and in very poor health. U-Turn runs two outreach programmes one in Tower Hamlets and the other in Newham. The oputreach workers work on the streets from 9pm -3am making contact with hard to reach women. The women are given a hot drink ,food as well as emergency clothing. U-Turns sexual health nurse gives advice and makes referrals into treatment services. Along side this we advice women on housing, drug services and treatment.
U-Turn also has a Women only centre where the women contacted on the street can come and have showers get clean clothes support in getting housed, have a full sexaul health check up, supported in getting registered with a G. P. As well as how to claim benefits. U-Turn also run a number of activities aimed at supporting the women into independant living free from abuse. The women are offered counselling to support them in dealing with the trauma that they have experienced while living on the streets. The service is very different to others in that we don't cook for the women they have to cook and clean up after themselves, they are given support in making phone calls but are encouraged to refer themselves on to other servces. U-Turn belives that the women can do more to help themselves and that this in turn can improve their self-worth.
