Founded 2003

  • Mission statement

Storybook Dads is an award-winning national charity working in over 100 UK prisons helping imprisoned parents maintain meaningful contact with their children. Prisoners children are the hidden victims of crime. Over 160,000 children each year in the UK suffer the trauma of parental imprisonment often leaving them feeling abandoned, isolated and stigmatized. This can lead to poor performance in school and delinquency. Over a quarter of prisoner lose all contact with their children - those that maintain contact are up to 6 times less likely to reoffend.
At Storybook Dads prisoners can record bedtime stories which are then edited and enhanced using music and sound effects before being sent to the child. Parents can also make educational resources for their children.
Enabling prisoners to do something tangible for their children helps to reduce the separation anxiety for both parent and child. Children feel less isolated because they can listen to the CD whenever they feel the need to. Prisoners perception of themselves as worthwhile parents is increased and the family bond is nurtured. Literacy skills for both parent and child can be developed through the enjoyment of storytelling.
Storybook Dads also employs prisoners and trains then to use editing software giving them new skills and work experience.
And since it is well documented that maintaining family ties & learning new skills helps to reduce reoffending, the benefits to society are immeasurable.
