Around one-quarter of all strokes, which cause the traumatic loss of a fully functioning body and mind, occur in children and adults of working age. Stroke is especially devastating for these younger people: one day fit and well, the next disabled; often with a young family to care for and support; and relying on employment for income rather than a pension. Different Strokes goal is that the 50,000 people under 65 who have a stroke each year in the UK make the best possible physical and psychological recovery and lead fulfilled lives.
Founded and still largely managed and staffed by younger stroke survivors, Different Strokes understands that younger stroke survivors consider it imperative that they make the best possible recovery both physically and psychologically. To enable them to achieve this it provides free access to relevant information, advice, support and specialised exercise classes, which all cater for the wide range of disabilities, issues and problems which result from stroke.
