Contact a Family

Contact a Family is the only charity supporting families with disabled children regardless of the disability of the child, and specialises in rare disorders. We reach over 300,000 families in the UK.

Founded 1982

  • Mission statement

Contact a Family improves the lives of families with disabled children. With them, we transform their lives, break down barriers and tackle disadvantage.

Clare Lally, whose daughter Katie has Quadraplegic Cerebral Palsy, Gastroesophageal reflux and Bulbar Palsy says of Contact a Family; "If it wasn't for Contact a Family and their staff then I wouldn't be the person I am today. It is through your help, support and continuous efforts to support my family that makes me strong. I know if I have any queries I can come online and get a reply. I know I can also phone the helpline and get an answer. Or if I want to speak to or make contact with any other parents then I can. No other service can say they do these things for families. I recommend and talk about Contact a Family to so many other people that I meet. "

Contact a Family has unrivalled experience and expertise in providing information and advice for families of disabled children, no matter what their disability or medical condition. We do this through our national freephone Helpline; offices across the UK providing workshops, newsletters, information and support for families and parent groups; a range of factsheets and guides; social events for families; linking families together for mutual support; a team of Family Workers and Volunteer Parent Representatives to provide emotional and practical help; websites that received 500,000 unique visits last year, and innovative online social media services.

  • Aims

    Contact a Family aims to:

    • Families with disabled children will know how to get the right support for them. Families need accurate information so that they can take up the services and support that is available.
    • Families with disabled children will be more confident to deal with the challenges they face. This means emotional support, to be listened to and their views respected by professionals.
    • The financial disadvantage that families with disabled children face should be alleviated.
    • Families with disabled children will be understood, valued and included as equal participants in their communities and our society.
