Respond was established in 1991 to provide psychotherapy, advice, information and support for people with learning disabilities whose lives have been affected by abuse and trauma.

The original idea for Respond came from two practitioners in the field of learning disabilities who, through the running of short term advocacy and empowerment groups for people with learning disabilities, had begun to hear more and more disclosures of abuse of all kinds: neglect, institutional, physical, emotional, financial, psychological and sexual. At that time no organisation existed that would accept referrals from such victims of abuse.
