Age Concern Gateshead

Set up in 1972, Age Concern Gateshead provides a wide range of services and activities for older people throughout Gateshead. Our services reduce social isolation & pensioner poverty, help support people to live independently and have choices, and provide services which improve people's physical and mental health.
Our 20 staff and 170 volunteers together help approximately 1,200 people a week. Services and activities include: daycentres for people who are frail and very isolated, bereavement support, befriending, social groups, exercise classes (including yoga, linedancing, tai chi, armchair exercise sessions), walking and cycling groups, advocacy service and information & advice. Some of our frailest clients in their 80's or 90's who live on their own literally have no family or friends left and, without our help, would never be able to leave their house (except to go to hospital). We try to ensure they still feel as if they can have a bit of a social life and feel part of a community again. (We will shortly be changing our name to Age UK Gateshead to become a local partner of the national charity Age UK - formed by the merger of Age Concern England & Help the Aged. However, we will remain an independent local charity. )
