Promoting Equality in African Schools (PEAS)

PEAS is an innovative UK charity that has found a sustainable solution to one of the most pressing problems faced by post-millenium-development-goals-Africa:
the provision of secondary education.

Founded 2004

  • Mission statement

Our mission is to unlock the potential of Africa by delivering equal access to affordable, quality secondary education.

PEAS founds and develops sustainable secondary schools that widen access to secondary education. PEAS works in Uganda and Zambia where just one in four young people enrol in secondary school. We are in the process of building three new schools in Uganda and one in Zambia, in addition to our existing network of 22 schools across Uganda and Zambia.

We have our own unique SmartAid model which takes a different approach to traditional international aid which can often create dependency. We create projects that generate sufficient internal revenue to continue to provide services indefinitely, which helps reduce the risk of dependency.

  • Aims

Promoting Equality in African Schools (PEAS) aims to:

    • Create 100,000 sustainably financed secondary school places in Uganda by 2021. Each PEAS school will be built out to have a minimum capacity of 1000 students.
    • Build a strong organisation capable of responsibly delivering PEAS goals.
    • Make PEAS schools the best free/low fee secondary schools in Uganda.
    • Demonstrate and communicate the success of PEAS so governments and NGOs can replicate our sustainable model.
    • Ensure at least 50% of the places at PEAS schools are occupied by girls.
