Promoting Equality in African Schools (PEAS)

PEAS is an innovative UK charity that has found a sustainable solution to one of the most pressing problems faced in Sub-Saharan Africa:
the provision of secondary education.

Founded 2004

  • Mission statement

Our mission is to unlock the potential of Africa by delivering equal access to affordable, quality secondary education.

PEAS builds and runs quality secondary schools, with a special focus on educating the most disadvantaged children in the communities we work in. PEAS works in Uganda and Zambia where just one in four young people enrol in secondary school. We have 28 schools in Uganda, and recently opened our fourth school in Zambia.

Sustainability is at the core of our approach, and we focus on ensuring our schools can run independently of foreign aid. At full capacity, PEAS schools are financially self-sustaining through low fees and ongoing grants from local governments.

  • Aims

Promoting Equality in African Schools (PEAS) aims to:

    • Create 100,000 sustainably financed secondary school places in Uganda by 2021. Each PEAS school will be built out to have a minimum capacity of 1000 students.
    • Build a strong organisation capable of responsibly delivering PEAS goals.
    • Make PEAS schools the best free/low fee secondary schools in Uganda.
    • Demonstrate and communicate the success of PEAS so governments and NGOs can replicate our sustainable model.
    • Ensure at least 50% of the places at PEAS schools are occupied by girls.
