Reducing poverty and achieving sustainable growth in the developing world will only be achieved through the use of science and technology. But many developing countries lack the ability to do this. In particular, they lack informatioh about how science can help meet needs in areas ranging from improving health to combatting climate change -- as well as the capacity to use this information effectively.

SciDev. Net (the Science and Development Network) is a UK charity set up in 2001 that seeks to address this problem. It provides information about the potential applications of science and technology to the relief of global poverty through its website (www. Scidev. Net). It also supports a range of activities to enhance the capacity of developing countries to communicate information about the possibilities offered by science and technology both to their policymakers and to the wider community.
