Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation

Our aim at nsif is simple and life changing: to develop a biological treatment for SCI. Our ultimate goal is to enable people with paralysis from SCI to enjoy everything we all take for granted, so that they can live independent lives again. We are committed to achieving this by funding a pioneering research project from the primary stages in the laboratories of University College London, to its clinical application at Wroclaw University Hospital.

Founded 2004

  • Mission statement

There is currently no accepted cure for spinal cord injury. This is in part because, until recently, it was a widely held belief that reconnecting severed spinal cords was not possible. The work we fund is challenging that belief.

The work involves the reconstruction of patients severed spinal cords using a special group of regenerative cells, olfactory ensheathing cells. These act as a “bridge” over which the damaged connection can grow back.

The first patient underwent this innovative procedure in 2012 followed by intensive physiotherapy. Since the operation he has made truly remarkable progress; from a completely severed spinal cord he is now able to register sensation below his injury, has seen improved bladder control, sexual function as well as being able walk with a frame.

All of these improvements, which were previously thought unachievable, signal the future of spinal treatment.

The possibility of spinal repair has been established but it must be replicated and verified. The team at Wroclaw University have already selected the second patient who is scheduled to have the procedure early 2018. While this is happening the team at UCL continue to determine better techniques of sourcing cells and discovering improved bridging materials to be applied clinically.

We envision spreading the benefits as widely as possible by continuing to publish all medical findings freely through the peer-review system. A cure is in sight but to reach it we need further support.

  • Aims
