The Connection at St Martin's - helping homeless people in London

The Connection is unique in that it works at the sharp end of homelessness, coming into contact with 25% of all rough sleepers in England and Wales. Our focus is to move people on to independence.

Founded 2003

  • Mission statement

The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Field's is the UK's busiest homelessness centre with on average 200 homeless people presenting every day.
We are extremely effective at preventing new rough sleepers from becoming entrenched; last year we ensured that 80% of those we saw did not spend a second night out on the streets. Those who are entrenched are being targeted by an innovative Outreach programme on the streets which provides prolonged and dedicated support, tackling the root causes of people's homelessness and carefully listening to their needs.
Unlike other homelessness organisations, all of our services are ground-level and user-led, enabling us to do what is best for our service-users.
We operate an open door policy, assisting rough sleepers from all backgrounds to take that first step off the streets by providing practical services, such as canteen, laundry, showers and GP service. We are also able to provide unique emergency accommodation in our Night Centre.
We will then help homeless people we see to build a life away from the streets with dedicated advice & housing and employment & training services.
Other services on offer address mental health, anger management, gambling addiction and drug and alcohol addiction. We are pioneers in holistic services too, with music and singing lessons, creative writing, and our fantastic Art Room. For many of our service-users, this therapy is a life-line to them, and we hold several exhibitions a year showcasing their work.

  • Aims

The Connection at St Martin's - helping homeless people in London aims to:

    • To reduce the number of homeless people sleeping rough on the streets of Westminster to as near zero as possible.
    • To provide advice and services which help vulnerable people in central London avoid, move on from, and stay away from the streets.
    • To provide specialist services to homeless people, including a Day Centre, Night Centre, medical care, Outreach, skills training and advice, housing and resettlement services and activity programmes.
    • To offer advice, care and support in a welcoming and friendly environment.
    • By encouraging each person to address the issues which caused their homelessness, we help them to gain the skills and confidence to make lasting changes in their lives.
