The Cirdan Sailing Trust

The Cirdan Sailing Trust provides disadvantaged young people with the opportunity for self development through an off-shore sailing experience aboard our fleet of three traditional sailing vessels.

Founded 1983

  • Mission statement

The Cirdan Sailing Trust operates in the specialised area of providing personal development opportunities for disadvantaged young people through life at sea on large sailing vessels. The young people come aboard our vessels with their youth leaders and take an active part in running the vessel including all aspects of sailing, navigating, cooking and cleaning. They are taken from their comfort zone and put into an alien environment where their endurance is stretched and their boundaries extended. These young people may be on the edge of crime, at risk, have learning difficulties or just need some direction in life but they will all develop essential life skills during the experience; they become more independent, take on responsibilities, improve communication skills, learn to face challenges and take controlled risks and develop the ability to work as team.
The Trust provides its service mainly to disadvantaged young people through the operation of its very successful Voyage of Discovery Fund. This scheme is financed through our fund raising efforts and helps to subsidise the cost of voyages according to a groups needs to ensure the opportunity is fully inclusive to all youth organisations in the UK.
