St Ambrose Young Families (SAYF)

SAYF offer support and help, particularly to those most at need through, poverty, isolation, unemployment, lack of skills and confidence. SAYF provide family learning opportunities, adult training courses and mentoring. The project responds to the needs of local people and helps them overcome barries such as learning difficulties to help them become much more involved, integrated and heard in their communities. Key to our work is creating 'circles of support' groups of friends, family and community members learning together to help individuals to achieve their goals.

We have a volunteer training programme which trains and assists volunteers to provide support to families with complex needs and perhaps most importanatly it encourages includsion and friendships between a diverse range of people from a wide range of backgrounds. Many of our volunteers first came to us to access our family learning opportunities and have gained skills & confidence and become volunteers themselves. These volunteers then encourage other parents in the same way, and so the project evolves and expands further into the wider community. The project is in such demand that the families have this year lobelled local councillors and MP Hazel Blears for funding for the project. This was featured in local newspapers and local T. V.
