National Youth Theatre of Great Britain

The National Youth Theatre of Great Britain is a world-leading youth arts organisation. We were established in 1956 as the first youth theatre in the world and over the past 60 years we have nurtured the talent of hundreds of thousands of young people.

We inspire, train, and showcase exceptional performers and theatre technicians aged 14-25 from Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Each year we reach out across the UK to discover diverse new talent.

Our training is unique because we believe that the best place for young performers to learn is on stage in front of an audience. We showcase young talent on West End stages, in stadiums world-wide and at iconic sites both at home and abroad. We commission brave and relevant new writing and reinterpret classic stories for our time. We are as ambitious as the young people we serve.

  • Mission statement

    Mission

NYT is a world leading youth arts organisation. We inspire, develop and showcase exceptional young people aged 14 to 25 from across the UK.

We believe that the best way for young people to learn is by doing, and by engaging with leading artists and industry professionals.

We create skill development models that nurture and support talent, providing alternatives to formal training which respond to and meet young people’s needs. Our programmes give young people the competitive edge and support their practical career development.

Our commitment to excellence sees us work with the most exceptional young people each year through our flagship programmes, NYT REP and Playing Up.

We champion and develop the best in emerging talent, including directors and writers, and commission brave and relevant new work.

We provide creative pathways that enable young people interested in all areas of the theatre industry to progress.

We produce live performance that reflects the times we live in. Innovative mass ensemble events have fuelled our ambition, giving a platform for young people’s creativity.

We are international in our outlook, at the front line of cultural diplomacy and promoting global citizenship.

We look to partner with people and organisations that can take our vision in new directions. By drawing on established talent including our diverse and highly skilled alumni, we are able to offer young people mentorship opportunities and access to creative networks.

We are a company of firsts, continually breaking the mould and cementing our reputation as a pioneer in youth arts performance.

We are as ambitious as the young people we serve.
