M6 THEATRE COMPANY
M6 THEATRE COMPANY
M6 Theatre Company, founded in 1977, grew from, and maintains, a passionate commitment to creating high quality, innovative and engaging theatre for young audiences. Based in Rochdale and reaching over 15,000 young people every year, M6 is renowned for its high quality, diversity and originality and is acknowledged as one of Britain’s leading theatre companies. M6 keeps young people’s thoughts, feelings and struggles at the heart of the organisation’s work and this inspiration continues to feed the ideas, the realisation and ensures the deep emotional resonance.
The majority of M6’s output is specially commissioned or devised from original stories. Each new project, however large or small, is carefully researched and developed in close collaboration with artists, educationalists and young people. M6’s work brings curiosity, imagination, understanding and connections into children’s lives through rich and relevant stories told through the integration of exciting theatre forms. A growing strand of M6’s work is the inspiring, sensitive and highly visual theatre for the very young. These intimate productions incorporating dance, puppetry and music offer very young children a magical and captivating introduction to live performance.
M6’s powerful and thought provoking productions for older audiences include specially commissioned plays and exciting new interpretations of excellent extant scripts.
In addition, M6 have created a unique repertoire of compelling short single voice plays specially created for specific audiences. Written by a wide range of skilled writers, these productions enable M6 to take emotionally charged stories into classrooms, conferences, prisons and theatre settings.
M6 performances are accompanied by interactive, facilitated workshops which are designed to deepen young people’s understanding of the (characters’ thoughts and feelings and the) issues raised in the play and stimulate important peer discussions. Productions are also supported by imaginative follow up resource materials to further enhance the learning experience.
Diversity and access are central to M6’s work – in style, themes and range of audience. An awareness of, and sensitivity towards, the target audience is paramount to the Company and is reflected in every aspect of the creation and delivery of each production.
The majority of M6’s work takes place in the North West, primarily in areas of multiple deprivation. Productions are inspired by and grown in M6’s local community, but their universal relevance means they are also hugely successful in theatres, festivals, conferences and community settings throughout the country.
M6 consistently pushes the boundaries of form and content and the Company has been a major pioneer in the development of bi lingual theatre integrating English with South Asian languages.
M6’s vibrant and innovative artistic and educational programme is made possible by the valuable financial support and skills sharing input of a range of partners. These mutually beneficial and key relationships are based on a shared vision and ethos, and enable M6 to enrich the lives of some of the most marginalised groups in our communities.
Integrating powerful, emotionally driven narrative with imaginative set designs and compelling original music, M6’s work has received great acclaim from audiences locally, nationally and internationally. Prestigious awards from the Manchester Evening News, the Writers Guild, the Canadian DORA and art 06 have all recognised M6’s excellent theatre work for young audiences. In 2006 Dorothy Wood, M6’s Artistic Producer received and MBE in recognition of her “Services to Drama in the North West”.
Through an exciting, accessible and collaborative approach, M6’s wide-ranging Youth Theatre outreach programme enables diverse groups of young people to realise their creative potential and develop performances that share their own authentic voices and experiences. M6’s greatly values this ongoing consultation with young people which consistently informs the Company’s work.
M6 are committed to making the next 30 years as ground breaking as the last and will continue to stretch the boundaries of audience, form and content with
powerful thought provoking theatre that touches the heart and minds of young people, helping to change lives for the better.
