Bromley Mencap

Bromley Mencap seeks to promote, in partnership with those concerned, the well being and development of people with disabilities of all ages in all areas of their lives and to support their families in supporting them.

To do this Bromley Mencap provides a range of services and activities including - a training and employment scheme, a telephone helpline, advocacy, support around welfare benefits, childminding networks, a service for people with profound and multiple disabilities, a Health & Fitness Club, an Outdoors Activity Club, a 6-week Summer Scheme for young adults, lunchtime workshops for older carers, support for mutual carers, peer support groups and a variety of social inclusive activities including discos, cinema mornings, coach trips and theatre workshops.

Bromley Mencap was formed 55 years ago by a small group of parents who came together for mutual support and to campaign for services for their disabled children. We now have over 600 members and provide a range of services for children and adults with disabilities and their families throughout the borough. We are also a campaigning organisation.

Through our services we have been instigators of many significant advancements in the care and support of people with disabilities in the borough, and we strive to promote a clearer understanding and awareness of disability by the general public.

To provide this comprehensive service to people living in the Borough of Bromley means that we will have to raise £700,000 this year alone. Although we are affiliated to the national charity Mencap we do not receive funding from them. We rely on individual donations, grants, trusts, corporate support and legacies to maintain these vital services.
