The Magdalen Project

The Magdalen Project is an educational and environmental charity that seeks to inspire and provide exploration of sustainability, organic food production and ecological land management on a hands-on basis. Our 132-acre working organic farm on the Dorset/Somerset border, registered with The Soil Association for many years, has a diverse range of managed and natural habitats, providing the basis for a wide range of courses, workshops and eco-adventures, which encourage both school children and adults to learn new skills, enjoy new experiences and, we hope, develop a deeper understanding of the countryside and a more sustainable approach to life.

Magdalen Farm is a leading practitioner of Care Farming, which is the use of working farms as a means of promoting mental and physical health by using animals, crops, woodlands and the agricultural landscape in work-related activities. The health sector and social services recognise the very real benefits of prescribing a session or series of sessions of care farming as an alternative to traditional medical treatment, therapy or work training. Care Farming helps a very wide range of people. These include those with defined medical or social needs (e. G. Disaffected young people, psychiatric patients, those suffering from mild to moderate depression, children and adults with learning disabilities, people with early-stage Alzheimer’s, drug or alcohol dependency), as well as those suffering from the effects of work-related stress, or chronic ill-health.
