Clean Break changes lives and changes minds through theatre – on stage, in prison and in the community.
Set up in 1979 by two women prisoners who believed that theatre could bring the hidden stories of imprisoned women to wider audiences, we have an unparalleled reputation for award-winning theatre and creative learning. We inspire playwrights and captivate audiences with our groundbreaking plays on the complex theme of women and crime and help women develop social and creative skills.
Clean Break's mission is to produce ground breaking theatre which puts women's voices at its heart and creates lasting change by challenging injustice in and beyond the criminal justice system.
Clean Break aims to:
- Produce bold, adventurous and outstanding theatre
- Spark action, curiosity and dialogue with audiences
- Advance research and our leadership to enrich the theatre ecology and criminal justice landscape
- Run our organisation with equity, fairness and resilience, and with women’s voices at the heart
