  • Mission statement

Fight for Sight is the UK's leading charity dedicated to funding world-class research into the prevention and treatment of blindness and eye disease. We are currently funding over 50 research projects conducted by teams attached to 24 universities and hospitals across the UK. For the majority of these projects the teams are undertaking the research in the UK. Other research is being undertaken in Africa, Asia and Central America.

Our current research programme covers a number of eye conditions including age-related macular degeneration, corneal disease, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, trachoma and cataract as well as the causes of childhood blindness. Fight for Sight also funds research into a large number of rare eye diseases.

It is estimated that there are 1. 8 million people living with sight loss in the UK alone. For approximately half of these people, a sight test and the right glasses will correct their vision. For the other half affected by age related, diabetic and inherited eye diseases it is not so straightforward. Either medical treatment in the form of drugs or surgery is required or sadly, for an increasing number of people, no treatment currently exists.
