Charity information

SAFE@Last is a registered charity working with local young people who have run away from or been forced out of the place where they usually live.

These vulnerable young people risk being drawn into drugs, crime, prostitution and violent abuse.

1 in 9 children under 16 years run away from home every year, that’s 3200 children a year in South Yorkshire alone.

SAFE@Last provides a range of vitally needed services to help keep these young people safe.

- FREE HELPLINE: The free helpline service 0800 781 7536 is open around the clock every day of the week, operated by Childline-trained volunteers, and supported by a professional emergency response service. The helpline provides advice and support and practical help to young people at risk.

- PREVENTING REPEAT RUNNING: Working with South Yorkshire Police, SAFE@Last support workers operate a successful MISPER (missing persons) scheme offering help to young runaways who have been found and returned home, so they will not run away again.

- AWARENESS LESSONS: SAFE@Last has distributed leaflets and advice to most of the senior schools in South Yorkshire, and gives workshops in school on the dangers of running away.

- REFUGE ACCOMMODATION: In April 2007, after several years of fundraising, negotiations and campaigning, SAFE@Last opened an emergency refuge to provide safe, temporary accomodation for under 16s in need. The SAFE@Last refuge is the only facility of it’s kind in the UK outside London or Glasgow.
