Centre for Sustainable Energy

The Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) is an independent national charity, established in 1979 to tackle climate change and end the misery of cold homes. We undertake practical work to support households and communities to take action on energy, alongside original research and analysis to inform local and national policy.

Founded 1979

  • Mission statement

CSE's mission is to tackle climate change and fuel poverty – providing sustainable energy both now and in the future.

CSE began life in Bristol in 1979, pioneering approaches to sustainable energy which have relevance for people across society. We now employ 50 staff delivering around 50 individual projects each year, including pan-UK projects and initiatives within our local area (Somerset and the West of England), often using local schemes as a testbed for ideas.

We provide practical guidance, advice and support to individuals and communities to empower them to take action on energy. This ranges from home visits to vulnerable and fuel poor households through to supporting community groups to set up their own renewable energy projects.

We also provide original research and policy analysis to help national and local government, housing associations and others to improve policy-making, housing stock energy efficiency and low carbon planning. Our senior staff hold government, industry and academic advisory roles.

CSE is widely recognised as a national leader in fuel poverty and community energy support.

CSE receives no core funding, and raises its income through a combination of charitable funding and contracts for projects which help us to deliver our mission. Donations to CSE will help us to reach more people through our household and community programmes. If you are interested in supporting our work, please contact us on 0117 934 1400 or info@cse. Org.
