Build Africa

We work in remote areas of Kenya and Uganda, combining education and livelihoods projects which empower children and their families to improve their quality of life and bring about lasting change.

Founded 1978

  • Mission statement

We believe that access to quality education has a great impact on the quality of life of children in the communities we support. Our education projects aim to:
    - Lay the foundations for learning by looking at ways to help give children a good introduction to education. A child's early years are critical to ensuring they benefit fully from their primary education and beyond
    - Ensure children get the best possible primary education, with a focus on a range of skills and competencies
    - Increase opportunities for girls to benefit fully from a quality education. We develop our work in regions where girls are especially disadvantaged, focusing on issues such as restrictive cultural practices and girl-friendly teaching methodologies
    - Supporting the transition from primary to secondary education or vocational training, to overcome the barriers which can prevent children from progressing beyond primary school

We also believe that families in the communities we support must have enough food and income to meet all basic needs. Our livelihoods projects aim to:
    - Tackle people's ability to save and to access credit through setting up savings and loans groups. Ensure the effectiveness of these groups through links with the formal financial sector and an expansion of business skills development work
    - Improve farm productivity, market access, post-harvest storage and marketing to help ensure families have access to food throughout the year and the opportunity to increase their incomes
