Lister Steps is a community based charitable organisation, set up by parents to address the need for childcare and family support in the Tuebrook area of Liverpool. The Charity has developed over the past nine and a half years in response to desperate local needs; our services allow Parent/Carers the opportunity to access training, education or employment. At present we are registered with OFSTED to provide over 100 full day and sessional childcare places each day. The services we offer have grown to include: Full day nursery care for babies and pre-school children, pre-school playgroup, breakfast and after school clubs and full day holiday playscheme.
Lister Steps is based in Tuebrook, approximately 3 miles from Liverpool City Centre. The Index of Multiple Deprivation ranks the area as one of the 20% most deprived wards in the UK. Many of the Children who attend our centre experience higher levels of poverty than their peers elsewhere in the country – they are more likely to become involved in anti social behaviour, crime and substance misuse – their ability to achieve their potential academically can be compromised by their background and the disadvantage they experience. Social Services and Health Visitors refer many of the families who use the centre, in an attempt to alleviate the pressures on the family and assist the child in the development of their social and life skills. As such these children often experience social and emotional difficulties that prevent their full integration within the setting. Whilst the child is in our care we believe that we have a golden opportunity to influence their development in a positive way. Our aim is to redress the disadvantage that they experience and give them the confidence to stand up against negative peer pressure and the influence of the ‘gang culture’, now and in the future.
