Kent Ethnic and Refugee Action Network

To relieve the need and hardship of refugees, asylum seekers, ethnic minorities and their dependents principally in Kent, particularly by the provision of advice, information, and public education about the position of refugees and migrants. We are a small voluntary organisation and we focus on integration and direct support through our existing four Projects, 1-to -1 Mentoring of Unaccompanied Asylum-seeking Minors, a Canterbury based Education project for them, a Minorities Integration Project in Ashford and a much-needed Support Group for the large numbers of refugees and minorities in Thanet (principally Margate and Cliftonville). In conjunction with Refugee Action and AVID we originally set up and funded through Volunteering England the flourishing Dover Detainee Visitor Group and we initiated and have kept going for 7 years a multi-agency supported Dover Multicultural Festival for Refugee Week.

We provide information-sharing including publishing a monthly Newsletter, for support groups and others including multi-agency committees, on refugee and migrant issues. We also give talks to groups, help students and researchers, issue public information leaflets, and respond to live and recorded media news and documentary requests from many sources, including local, national and international, on current refugee and migrant Issues. We hope to extend all of this work in time to all towns with migrant populations across the very large and often neglected county of Kent with its important Dover gateway to migrants and refugees.
