Founded 2000

  • Mission statement

The Mission of our charity is to improve the quality of life of stroke patients through the provision of a live reading service delivered by professional actors in hospital stroke wards and stroke clubs. Our service uplifts mood, 46% of stroke patients suffer from depression. We also believe our service stimulates the neural networks of the brain, speeding up the rehabilitation and recovery process. Professional actors are used because they bring stories to life Actors also have
    * The dramatic skills to hold the concentration of somebody who is not only unwell but also in the hospital environment.
    * The vocal stamina to sustain long periods of reading.
    * The antennae to respond to unspoken reactions from the patients
    * The technique to read for lengthy periods of time.
Many stroke patients spend endless hours in a hospital bed with hardly any interaction with others at all. The actor will sit with a patient, talking, reading and listening, the length of time spent on any one individual depending on the patient's wishes. We make every effort to provide reading material that will stimulate patients from every walk of life and that will suit their present level of comprehension.
The actors have a library of diverse stories of varying lengths and genres. They also carry numerous features, poetry and jokes.
Stroke is now the second biggest killer in England and Wales and the number one cause of serious disability in the United Kingdom. A stroke can affect anyon
