Wilts & Berks Canal Trust

Working to restore this historic canal for the benefit of local communities and the environment across Wiltshire, Swindon and Oxfordshire.

Founded 1977

  • Mission statement

The Wilts & Berks is Britain's longest canal restoration - 67 miles - running from Semington on the Kennet & Avon Canal, through Melksham, Calne, Chippenham, Wootten Bassett and Swindon to Abingdon on the River Thames and north to the Thames & Severn Canal near Cricklade.

The aim of the Trust is to restore this historic navigation, which has been abandoned for nearly 100 years, and turn it into a 21st century asset for all the communities along the route. A restored canal gives local people an interesting and relaxing place to visit and provides a green corridor for a diversity of wildlife. There will be access for boats from the main canal system, a long distance towpath for walkers and cyclists, opportunities for canoeing and fishing, 67 miles of standing water for water fowl and wetland habitats.

  • Aims

Wilts & Berks Canal Trust aims to:

    • To create a continuous navigable waterway, linking to the national network resulting in economic, social and environmental benefits for all communities along the route.
