Against Breast Cancer
Against Breast Cancer
Against Breast Cancer is funding dedicated research into the early diagnosis of breast cancer recurrence so that doctors can treat secondary breast cancer faster and more effectively.
Against Breast Cancer funds research into breast cancer. There are several strands to the research - biochemistry, immunology, diet and lifestyle. Each one is geared towards discovering how to increase survival after diagnosis and our ultimate goal is to discover a vaccine against breast cancer.
1/ Tumour biology - preventing secondary spread
Our biochemists are studying aggressive breast cancers to find out why they spread to other parts of the body (this is known as 'secondary spread') and how this can be prevented. They are working towards creating a blood test that will enable doctors to identify the recurrence of breast cancer earlier and treat it faster and more effectively.
2/ Immunology - patient response
Our researchers are investigating the low level of natural immunity in breast cancer patients and how it can be stimulated to fight secondary spread of the disease. Ultimately, the goal is to discover a vaccine against breast cancer
3/ Diet and lifestyle - environmental factors
Our on-going Diet & Lifestyle study of over 3,000 breast cancer patients in 56 hospitals across the UK will help establish how diet, lifestyle and complementary treatments affect the spread of breast cancer and will identify ways in which patients who have had breast cancer can help protect themselves from recurrence
Against Breast Cancer aims to:
- produce a vaccine against breast cancer
- produce a blood test for early identification of the recurrence of breast cancer
- identify diet & lifestyle factors that will enable patients to help themselves increase their survival after diagnosis of breast cancer
- produce a urine test for early identification of the recurrence of breast cancer
