Founded 1978

  • Mission statement

Founded by Vivienne Price in 1978, the NCO's mission is to identify, nurture and showcase musical excellence. It aims to be the leading training ground for professional musicians - bringing together over 600 exceptionally gifted young players from across the United Kingdom every year through its six age-banded national orchestras and six regional orchestras in East Anglia, London, South West, South East, and Yorkshire and the Humber.

The NCO has a proven track record in delivering outstanding orchestral courses, personal development, and performance opportunities for young talented musicians from across the UK. NCO alumni include winners of the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition Guy Johnston and Nicola Benedetti, as well as Principal Conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Robin Ticciati, and internationally-acclaimed young conductor Daniel Harding. Many former members can be found in leading professional orchestras, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Hallé Orchestra.

The Under 13 and Main Orchestras regularly perform to the paying public at prestigious venues including the Royal Festival Hall, Symphony Hall Birmingham and Leeds Town Hall.
