The St James the Less Preservation Trust

This is a Trust committed to providing viable future for a Grade 2 listed building by converting it into a vibrant Arts Centre for the community of New Mills and itls locality.

Founded 2004

  • Mission statement

We have purchased the building (former church) and are at presnet on site undertaliking the capital works. The Trust is busy restoring and converting the small Chapel of Ease of St James the Less on Spring Bank, New Mills, High Peak, having received a big Round Two grant from HLF. This beautiful Victorian church is closed as a place of worship as it is redundant to parish needs. The Trust will restore and convert the building, adding some extra facilities, to provide a small, studio-sized Arts Centre for the benefit of the community. It will be totally disability friendly. We desperately need further support in order to finance the arts fit-out once the building is completed.

The Trust, through its "Friends", has already established a new identity for this heritage building by presenting seasons of arts performances - ranging from drama and poetry to chamber music such as evenings by players from the Halle Orchestra. The events are a mix of high quality amateur and professional performances. We have nearly three quarters of a million pounds to complete the project and to provide a versatile base for local arts groups, together with high quality performance facilities. This is a fantastic, community-based project which has tremendous local support. We are urgently seeking additional funding for the arts fit-out and final equipping of the Centre..
