No-one wants to stay at home while their friends are out having fun. But for someone with a chronic bowel disease, who needs to have instant access to a toilet because they are prone to sudden and extremely painful bouts of diarrhoea, staying at home, close to the loo is a necessity. Not only can these diseases ruin a life, but they can have a major impact on schooling and career prospects.
There were almost 60,000 deaths in England and Wales in the year 2000 because of gastrointestinal diseases. Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are the third most common cause of death in the UK and have increased by 25 per cent in the past 10 years. Despite these statistics just two per cent of national research funding is spent on gastrointestinal diseases according to a recent study published by the UK Clinical Research Collaborative.
Core is the only charity in the UK that funds research into the entire range of gut, liver, intestinal and bowel illnesses. We are called Core because the digestive system is at the core of our body and a good digestive system is the core of good health. Established in 1971 with the support of the British Society of Gastroenterologists, Core supports Clinical Research Fellows and Research Scientists at hospitals and universities throughout the UK, investigating conditions such as pancreatitis, hepatitis, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, crohn’s disease and digestive cancers. All research that we fund is rigorously peer-reviewed.
