National Stone Centre

The National Stone Centre is an independent educational charity. The centre’s aim is to tell all aspects of the ‘Story of Stone’ – history, science, technology, art, craft and environment - from the Earths’ beginnings through to modern extraction and usage. This is acheived by using the resources of the fifty acre site which contains six limestone quarries, over one hundred and twenty lead mine shafts, four lime kilns and the Discovery Centre.
The centre hosts educational visits for nearly 10,000 students every year as well as offering training courses in dry stone walling and other sustainable building skills.
