Scottish Churches Housing Action

Scottish Churches Housing Action brings together 13 major church denominations and organisations to support the churches’ work on homelessness in Scotland.

Founded 1993

  • Mission statement

Scottish Churches Housing Action has three main areas of activity:
Initiating local projects that encourage and support volunteers to take action in their own community to tackle homelessness. Through the Churches Homelessness Initiatives Programme, groups are established as independent bodies, providing essential local services. Much of this work has had an impact in smaller communities, where there is little provision for homeless people.
Reaching people in the churches to raise their awareness about the problems of homelessness. The quarterly newsletter Our Homeless Neighbour, has a circulation of 3,000. Volunteer speakers address meetings of church groups throughout Scotland.
Being a voice for the churches in matters relating to housing and homelessness and taking an active national role in public policy and legislation.

  • Aims

Scottish Churches Housing Action aims to:

    • Encourage the practical support of housing projects by church agencies and parishes as an integral part of that outreach and pastoral ministry.
    • Stimulate a Christian response to housing policy issues
    • Provide assistance and support in developing volunteer projects to assist homeless people and promote skills for independent living.
    • Encourage the use of church owned property for affordable housing, where it is no longer required for church use.
    • Provide educational material for churches or other groups
