Hackney Empire is a special building in a special place. Built in 1901 and now a Grade II* listed building, the Empire is the largest theatre of its type East London with 1,300 capacity. It has always been a confluence of the arts and popular culture presenting music hall, variety, burlesque, stand-up comedy, reviews, plays and concerts – not to mention operating as a film and TV location and a bingo hall.

    Hackney Empire has the world on its doorstep and on its stage. It is a theatre for the 21st century that embraces a local and global community of artists and audiences. Driven by its key values of quality, diversity and engagement the Empire is a positive and passionate organisation that is prepared to make ambitious decisions and try out new ideas. It presents a mix of high quality performance and participation activity – including comedy, variety, music, opera, popular dance and theatre.
