AMC / WAW promotes the recognition of women in Welsh history and the preservation of sources of women's history in Wales. We hold conferences, exhibitions, events, workshops throughout Wales.

Founded 1998

  • Mission statement

The principal purpose of the Archive is to raise the profile of women in the history of Wales and encourage the study and understanding of those women’s lives. We also work with the Welsh County Archive Services and the National Library of Wales to help people understand the historic value of women’s papers, photographs and memorabilia and to facilitate the long-term survival of this valuable evidence.
We provide a national network for people interested in researching women’s history. Our Annual Conference provides a forum for students and individual researchers to present work in progress in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and also includes lectures by established historians. Other events include book launches, talks, exhibitions, and women’s history roadshows, sometimes in collaboration with other relevant organisations. We publish a quarterly Newsletter for members.
The Archive, which is a charity financed by members’ subscriptions, now has a membership of nearly 200, united by a passion for the history of women’s lives in Wales. Groups of members undertake specific projects from time to time to further the work of the Archive. We are currently exploring ways to introduce women’s history into school history teaching and the National Curriculum. We are currently developing a new project into women in Post World War 2 manufacturing industries in Wales. We work in both Welsh and English, and new members are are always welcome.
