The Yard Theatre Limited
The Yard Theatre Limited
The Yard is a theatre and music venue in a converted warehouse in Hackney Wick.
Built out of salvaged material by a group of 50 dedicated volunteers led by Artistic Director Jay Miller, we are committed to telling contemporary stories in contemporary ways.
In 7 years, our work has been seen by hundreds of thousands of people. Shows we have made have transferred to the National Theatre, been turned into television series and toured the U. K.
The Yard has become a home for bold, genre-defying new theatre that communicates contemporary, unheard stories and ideas in new and innovative ways. The Yard’s work injects creativity and fearlessness into wider contemporary culture. A theatrical necessity, The Yard is committed to:
- Discovering and developing vital new voices
- Producing ground-breaking new work
- Telling urgent stories about our world today
“It's a beacon of exciting, progressive new work in theatre-poor east London and a real model for what a theatre can and should be in the twenty-first century” Time Out
In a remarkably short time we have had significant success; our work has toured internationally, we’ve transferred two shows to the National Theatre (we were their first Associate Company in 2013), we’ve received multiple awards and partnered leading theatres including the Young Vic and the Royal Court. Through our ability to identify artists and inspire new work, The Yard has become a leader in the future of theatre.
In 2016, we were asked by the London Legacy Development Corporation (planning authority – ‘LLDC’) to take on the management of a community centre, Hub67 neighbouring The Yard. We recruited a full-time Local Programmer who joined the team in June 2016 and has been working closely with local residents to develop a programme based on local need. In our first year at the community centre we welcomed over 6,000 people, of whom 61% were under 18 and 94% were from Hackney or Tower Hamlets.
The Yard Theatre Limited aims to:
- To discovering and develop vital new voices producing ground-breaking new work, and telling urgent stories about our world today
- To use our distinctive approach to produce high-quality work with young people that is widely considered provocative, humane and beautiful.
- To build and nurture strong relationships formed by trust and collaboration with local residents, organisations and businesses in order to reach beyond our own limits.
