Cleft

CLEFT funds research into the causes and treatment of cleft lip and palate. We also help dedicated cleft teams in some of the poorest countries in the world by providing equipment and training.

Founded 2007

  • Mission statement

CLEFT was set up in 2007 by the North Thames Cleft Lip and Palate Centre (based at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London and the St Andrew’s Centre, Broomfield Hospital, Essex) in order to research the unanswered problems in improving care for children born with cleft lip and palate.

We aim to push the boundaries of conventional treatment by funding research into improving operating techniques and by looking at the underlying reasons for cleft lip and palate, such as possible genetic links. We also research associated conditions such as 22q11. 2 deletion syndrome (velocardiofacial syndrome).

Information resulting from our research projects will be passed on to centres throughout the world.

We also provide support for cleft lip and palate teams in the developing world by working with them to improve facilities and surgical outcomes. We have regular contact with teams in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Uganda and Egypt. CLEFT does not fund the travel or accommodation costs for visits to these countries by Western specialists, and unlike some other charities we do not fund individual operations as we believe that the best way to help children in the future is to develop and empower local teams.

75% of CLEFT’s funds are allocated to research projects and 25% to our overseas work
