Fleur-de-lys Institute

Known as Flower Stute, our former miners library & hall built in 1911, now runs as a community building, to provide a local & affordable community venue for hire to groups, clubs, & indivduals.

Founded 2009

  • Mission statement

We are first & foremost a community building run by volunteers for our local communities. We struggle with raising the £500 monthly operating costs & our former sports hall, library reading room & meeting room are permanently out of bounds, due to age, dilapidation and dove infestation. We also had to recently close our ground floor dance hall, due to a water leak caused by metel thieves, losing valuable clubs with weekly bookings.

Our old sports hall, spawed one World boxing champ, Robbie Regan, but now there is a chronic lack of in-door sports facilities within our area for people of all ages. This project will revitalise a 'derelict' former mens boxing gym located on our 2nd floor (its entirety) for multiple sports/club activities on a daily basis.

Female participation in sport & physical activity based clubs is traditionally low in the S. Wales valleys, our proposals provide a facility for both genders of all ages at a very low capital cost. We will undertake a physical capital improvement to a former mens Boxing gym, shower & storage areas,
on the 3rd floor of the Fleur de Lys Institute. Including removal of a dilapidated suspended ceiling, fumigation and chemical cleaning of hall following a long-term infestation of wild doves, repainted walls and new changing cubicles & benches, including an overhall of the vandalised shower area, ensuring community centered quality sports facilities that can cater for people of all ages & gender..... For the very first time.
