  • Mission statement

Since its inception in 1973, the principal activity of the Midland Railway Trust has been the creation of a museum and associated facilities commemorating the Midland Railway. An extensive museum complex has been developed at Swanwick, and the museum aims to tell the story of the Midland Railway, its predecessors and successors, by the conservation and display of a vast range of artefacts relating to the Railway and its environs. This includes a unique collection of locomotives and rolling stock from the 1860’s to the present day. The museum is designed to enable people to learn about their heritage, and to protect the social environment for the benefit and education of present and future generations. The museum complex is open to the public every day of the year except Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

The Trust has also established an operational standard gauge heritage railway linking the museum complex with the main visitor access point at Butterley station. The line incorporates extensions to Hammersmith and Riddings to give a route length of 3. 5 miles. The railway operates at weekends throughout the year, and daily during school holidays.

The Trust’s site also incorporates a Country Park of some 40 acres. The park, established in the mid 1980s, exists for the protection of the natural environment. It offers a wide variety of habitats that encourage wildlife throughout the year, and provides enjoyment for its visitors and the local population.
