October Gallery Trust

October Gallery is a charitable trust that hosts exhibitions of art from around the world. We are able to offer free art workshops and training to the local community as well as supplementing school workshops through sales of art, rental of the Gallery’s facilities, grants and donations. We are dedicated to democratising the gallery setting; giving a diverse public the opportunity to create artworks in our Gallery space.
Our Education Department aims to reach a mixed audience, emphasising cultural plurality, high quality artistic processes and outcomes. Through exploring the rich stylistic variety of contemporary art from around the world, we are able to engage with our multicultural local communities and promote global citizenship.

  • Mission statement

October Gallery aims to be a community space that gives a varied public the opportunity to create and learn within the gallery.
The October Gallery education department is at the forefront of this idea and aims to reach a mixed and diverse audience, from youth, teenagers, and teachers, to people with learning disabilities, refugees, trafficked women, and prison inmates.
Each month we run Family Art Days onsite and at the 1A Children’s centre. Here we promote family learning, giving both parents and children to engage with contemporary art, creating their own artworks with high quality materials. We are now using this experience to establish regular prison based Family Art Days, for children visiting their parents.
We have a strong working relationship with PAN intercultural arts, Coram’s Fields Youth Club and Action Space. Through partnering with theses charities we have been able to reach budding refugee artists, local teenagers and those with learning difficulties. We have created amazing artworks and exhibited them at the gallery.
We are currently launching regular meetings with women who have escaped sexual exploitation. We will be collaborating on a series of projects with them and providing them with a space to meet each month.
Our education department supports teachers through free creative professional development sessions. Here we provide materials and a professional artist to assist teachers in exploring our current exhibitions and developing ways of using contemporary art to inform cross curricular learning. By providing working opportunities and guidance for emerging artists and volunteers, we hope to also support career development.
Through exploring the rich stylistic variety of contemporary art from around the world, we are able to engage with these diverse and multicultural groups and promote learning and global citizenship.
October Education is dedicated to continuing to provide a public space for these communities and to expanding the education programme in dialogue with them, in order to develop a programme that situates itself in the community, as part of it.
