Founded 2008

  • Mission statement

MicroEnterprise Africa was established in 2008 by a joint UK and Malawian team. Its mission is to support African entrepreneurs with development finance and business advice.

The MEA team has extensive experience of agriculture and its priority has been to establish a social enterprise model for farming which combines philanthropic capital, African entrepreneurs and subsistence farmers.

The farming model has 2 components: (1) a large scale commercial farm run on commercial principles jointly owned by MEA and a local Malawian team; (2) a smallholder support scheme which links smallholder farmers to the farm's resources, skills and markets.

We opened out first farm in 2009 and this year, after 2 years of investment, it will make a small operating profit. We have already been working with local smallholders on a pilot basis and will now roll this out on a larger scale.

Although farming has been our first priority we are also looking at other areas. The key challenge is to identify feasible business opportunities and then match them with philanthropic capital. We encourage, and in fact need, donors to be closely involved with the business selected..

  • Aims

    MicroEnterprise Africa aims to:

    • Our fourth aim is the relief of poverty and the spread of education.
    • Our third aim is to improve the income and standard of living of African subsistence farmers. We do this by linking subsistence farmers to our large hub farms and sharing resources, skills and markets
    • Our first aim to to support African entrepreneurs and microenterprises with development finance and business capital
    • Our second aim is to develop the social enterprise model for supporting African entrepreneurs. We use mixed private and charitable ownership models to structure our businesses.
