Founded 1971

  • Mission statement

Leeds Youth Opera seeks to encourage an education and appreciation of music, song and drama particularly of young people through the medium of opera. Led by professional music and artistic directors LYO develops young people's singing and dramatic abilities through the production of classical and modern opera repertoire. LYO also provides opportunities for young artistic directors, designers and costumiers to practice their skills as assistants.
LYO achieves a semi-professional quality through the commitment of many members over several years and whilst focussed on Leeds brings in members from Birmingham to Carlisle and Newcastle to perform in lead roles.
Principals are both home grown and drawn from colleges and universities in the North of England.
Leeds Youth Opera involves other young people in its productions through collaboration with members of Leeds Youth Orchestra and with other community choirs and amateur dance groups in the City of Leeds.
