FoodBank rescues food otherwise destined for landfill from food suppliers, supplements it with staple foods and distributes nutritionally balanced meals to 1,700 organisations in the townships
South Africa produces enough food to feed it entire population yet 20% of South Africans are food insecure. FoodBank is creating green and sustainable programmes throughout the country enabling its beneficiaries to focus on area such as ill health, poor education, poor hygiene and crime.
FoodBank creates coordinated national food rescue and distribution channels to assist community-based organisations that serve the most vulnerable. In urban areas FoodBank’s Food Rescue programme enables it to source food from large supermarket chains that would otherwise go to landfill. This food is repackaged and provided to its partner agencies, to help them to feed more than 377,000 beneficiaries. This green programme saves thousands of tonnes of viable food from landfill each year. The company’s Food Procurement Programme buys staple foods, utilising the benefit of economies of scale in order to negotiate significant discounts on food supplements that enhance its nutritious food parcels.
In rural areas FoodBank’s Food Development Programme works with other non-profit organisations and government to create jobs and new sources of food by making smallholder farmers viable. Partnerships with the urban foodbanks can create a market for the resulting produce. The first rural foodbank in Jozini, KwaZulu Natal, opened recently.
Currently Foodbank feeds 35,000 people per day, half being children. FoodBank’s vision is “A South Africa without hunger and malnutrition.
