Surf Action is a charity that uses surfing and the beach environment to deliver physical and mental well being to those who have served in the armed forces and civilian emergency services.
To promote and protect the physical, mental health and welfare of those who have been wounded whilst serving in the Armed Forces by introducing them to peer group activities.
To provide continuity to the veterans and their family members. By providing the daily and weekly support they need through the activities provided such as the coastal activities, skills development, residential weeks or the welfare and counseling provided by Surf Action.
Firstly surfing and beach activities are a form of physical activity, the benefits of which are well known and proven in terms of physical and mental well being.
Secondly the beach and coastal environment are intuitively beneficial. Research is now starting to show this connection with nature to be calming and beneficial in its own right.
These two processes change a state of mind, instilling characteristics such as self confidence and self esteem as well as providing camaraderie, and removing feelings of isolation and disassociation.
The combination of these activities and the natural environment acts as a catalyst for engaging clients into other beneficial areas.
