The Melton Constable Trust

The preservation and restoration of railways in Norfolk, both for their historical and educational value and for their environmental and public transport benefits.

Founded 2002

  • Mission statement

The ultimate mission is to create a Norfolk Orbital Railway consisting of a circuit: Norwich - Sheringham - Holt - Fakenham - Dereham - Wymondham - Norwich. Wymondham - Norwich - Sheringham is an existing Network Rail route, Norwich - Sheringham being one of the country's most successful community railways. Sheringham to High Kelling (short of Holt) and Wymondham - Dereham have been operating for many years as not-for-profit community owned heritage railways with scope for development to provide a public transport service. The first (the North Norfolk Railway) is run by a not-for-profit company supported by a charity. The second (the Mid Norfolk Railway) is run by a registered charity. Both have already been connected physically to the Network Rail part of the route. The Melton Constable Trust is working with both to pursue the gradual reconstruction of the missing section of the orbital route which will join the NNR and MNR lines largely over former railway trackbed.

The aims are to develop green tourism, preserve and restore historic artifacts, foster education in railway history and provide a public transport alternative to the car for strong environmental reasons.

The immediate mission is to purchase the land necessary to extend NNR from its present remote terminus into the population centre of Holt and to research and prove how MNR can be upgraded economically to permit a regular train service between Dereham (a major centre) and Norwich.

  • Aims

The Melton Constable Trust aims to:

    • Fund the purchase of land necessary for the extension of the North Norfolk Railway into the town of Holt. Purchase has been agreed with the present owners.
    • Fund help from experienced personnel to enhance existing studies of the Dereham - Norwich route's potential and show how technical upgrading can be achieved economically under community ownership.
