The Gumboots Foundation (UK)

Gumboots supports grass roots projects in South Africa working to empower children whose lives are disadvantaged by poverty and AIDS

Founded 2002

  • Mission statement

With a focus on education, Gumboots helps empower children in South Africa orphaned or disadvantaged by poverty and AIDS.

By working with home grown projects with local leadership we encourage the building of relationships between donors and beneficiaries and work in a spirit of partnership rather than dependency. We currently support three projects based in Alexandra Township in Johannesburg: Leratong Pre-school Education Project, Sigya Sonke Youth Dance and performing arts group and Ratang Bana providing family support to households where parents have died of Aids.
More recently, under the title Phetoho meaning 'change', we have developed a number of initiatives to help individual children to improve their education attainment levels. These include a bursary fund to help with school fees for schools outside of the township, uniforms, books and transport, a learning centre with computers and resources, supplementary tuition and a Leadership Course
Also operating under the Gumboots umbrella is the Caitlin Fund, set up in memory of Caitlin Green to help disadvantaged young women in South Africa achieve their educational aspirations.
