Autism Treatment Trust
Autism Treatment Trust is a charity based in Edinburgh. We are dedicated to maximise the learning and well being of individuals experiencing autism, and their families.
Autism treatment Trust and Edinburgh Napier University are collaborating on a research project which focuses on improving working memory skills in individuals with autism. Working memory is a system equivalent to a "Post It Memo", that helps people to keep information readily available to respond to a given situation or problem. More scientifically speaking, the system enables individuals to encode, decode and manipulate information for a short amount of time (Baddeley, 1996).
Working memory has been shown to be a good predictor of academic achievement, unlike IQ levels. Skills such as reading comprehension, writing and problem solving all require memory capacity skills (Alloway et al. 2008).
A considerable amount of research indicates that individuals with an autism spectrum disorder have reduced working memory capacity compared to typically developing individuals, which could have a negative impact on their school performance (Alloway et al. 2008). Our research aims to identify simple and enjoyable ways to strengthen these working memory skills in children with autism and evaluate their potential benefit on a set of selected cognitive evaluations.
We propose two main types of activities: ‘Fast ForWord’, a game-based language processing programme, and a range of pre-selected iPad applications. Both activities are known to captivate the attention and interest of people with autism. For the project to commence we rely on donations to complete our set of equipment.
Autism Treatment Trust aims to:
- Help individuals with autism to maximise their learning, and lead independent lives. Our current project focuses on the improvement of language and communication skills, using computerised games
