Above + Beyond runs local community transformation projects in North East London and Essex. It also operates overseas through their Beyond Ourselves project. Beyond Ourselves is working in partnership with local people in Zambia helping to build and develop community schools in the Copperbelt province of Zambia.
Beyond Ourselves is working in partnership with local people in Zambia helping to build and develop community schools in the Copperbelt region of the country.
The majority of children in these schools are orphans and vulnerable children who cannot afford to go to the government schools and are living in communities where there is high unemployment, high HIV prevalence and low life expectancy.
We begin by building relationship with an existing community school, and then partner with them to help resource and develop the school in the following ways through a child sponsorship programme:
•Building a classroom block, toilet block and kitchen area
•Running a feeding programme that feeds children every school day •Employing cooks and teachers
•Providing school resources and school uniform
•Employing a nurse to visit the school once a week
We are also working towards the schools becoming self sustainable and are setting up Income Generating Activities at each school to achieve this over the coming years.
Beyond Ourselves aims to:
- Serving the communities through our resources, focusing on the practical needs of the children and young people
- Working in partnership with local churches, schools, businesses and other organisations and people within the communities in Zambia and UK
- Developing sustainable, effective long term solutions to the needs in these communities, particularly for the children and young people
