A Team of 40+ volunteers providing a specialist land and swift water search and rescue facility with advanced casualty care capability for missing or injured persons on Dartmoor and across Devon.

Founded 1969

  • Mission statement

The North Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team (NDSART) is a voluntary organisation, based in Okehampton & affiliated to the Mountain Rescue Council, England and Wales. Its role is to provide a specialist land & swift water search & rescue facility with advanced casualty care capability for missing or injured persons on Dartmoor & across Devon, 24 hrs a day, 365 days of the year. We respond to 999 calls initiated through the Police & support both the fire brigade & the ambulance service with, for example, difficult evacuations from steep ground where our expertise of hauling stretchers with ropes is required. In addition to providing a search and rescue service, the team is recognised in the local civil contingency plan & in recent years has been called to assist stranded motorists in extreme weather & ‘chauffeur’ district nurses and paramedics in our 4x4. We support and assist at many local events, including the annual Ten Tors challenge, a 2 day expedition across Dartmoor with 2,500 young people participating; and the annual ‘Jubilee Challenge’, an expedition of varying lengths undertaken by 300 young people with special needs. All the 40+ volunteer team members undergo vigorous training on a weekly basis and have to demonstrate identified levels of competancy in navigation, search skills and techniques, casualty care and handling, rope work and operating around and in swift water. A good level of physical fitness is essential for operating in the often hostile conditions.
